Afraid Of The Dark

Plays: 7
Lyrics
Clouds of doubt hang around endlessly
Battle scars from the past stop me dead in my tracks
I''m weary from watching my hopes fade away
I need to change how I feel and see what is real

Oh I can''t be afraid of the dark
Why is it so hard to let down my guard
Through this shadowy haze
I''ve gotta find my way
Find my way through the dark

I hear life calling out constantly
Won''t you please take my hand, I''ll make your wish your command
Trade weakness for strength, face fear in the eye
Abandon my past that''s been holding me back

Oh I can''t be afraid of the dark
Why is it so hard to let down my guard
Through this shadowy haze
God help me find my way
Find my way through the dark

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT

Plays: 10
Backstory
In September, 2003, I was asked by a Social Worker friend of mine to sing a song that I had written called "Through A Child's Eyes" (which is about how child abuse is viewed through the eyes of a child) at a 'Take Back The Night' rally. ('Take Back The Night' is an annual event that is arranged by college campuses throughout the world. It acknowledges women survivors of violent sexual abuse, assault, incest, and other forms of violent abuse.) After I sang my song, the women were allowed to come up to the mic and give their personal story of survival. The experiences that I heard that night moved me to ask one of the women who was involved in planning the event if she would like me to write a song for them and call it "Take Back The Night". She was thrilled at the prospect of such a song. Awhile after the event, I emailed Joie Scott and explained the song idea to her. She graciously agreed to work on the song with me and, before too long, we had a very strong and empowering song. Our demo of the song turned out absolutely beautiful and I was able to share it at this year's TBTN event. The response was that it was 'mesmerizing', 'one of the best songs ever heard on the subject'. We hope to eventually have a female artist record it, as I've had many requests for copies of the song. (THIS is one of the reasons that I love writing - when people can be moved in such an emotional, positive manner!)
Lyrics
Take Back The Night
(c) Lisa Medill/Joie Scott

(verse)
Last night I took shelter
In the corner of my soul
When his shadow slid across the floor
His hands were damp and cold
My silent tears were crying to me
Like they've done before
You can't hide this pain inside you
There's no room left anymore

(chorus)
Take back the night
Only you hold the power
You can mend what's been broken and bruised
Take back your life
Take a vow
Strong enough to light the midnight sky
It's your right
Take back the night

(verse)
Now I need to face the darkness
To see the light of day
Heal my broken spirit
And tear the chains away
Believe I'm not a victim
I'm a person with a choice
And pray that others like me
Somehow find their inner voice

(chorus)

(bridge)
Every door has a lock, every lock has a key
All we need is time to find the one to set us free, oh, set us free

(half-chorus)
Take back your life
Take a vow
Strong enough to light the midnight sky
It's your right
Take back the night

(tag)
(Looking out on a new tomorrow)
Take back the night
(Listen to the voice inside you)
Take back the night
(Take a stand and make a promise)
Oh, it's your right
Take back the night

MIS'D

Plays: 411
Backstory
One day I took notice of words that began with the prefix "mis". I wanted to try to write a song using this prefix about a woman who wouldn't be misunderstood, etc. like she had in the past, a woman who is finally going to put her foot down and encourage other women to do so.

...Yes, I can say that this idea must have come about because I've learned to stand up for myself after having been mis'd by one too many people in my life. (I won't mention them in print, but if you're curious, ask me!) ;-D
Lyrics
MIS'D
(c) Lisa L. Medill

Have you ever been
Misvalued, misused
Yeah girl... me too
I was everyone's welcome mat
They'd walk over me and never look back

Did you ever feel
Mistrusted, mistreated
Believing that is self-defeating
There's a price I paid for the choices I made
To give up my voice was a costly mistake

(chorus)
I was in a constant battle
To prove that I was worth
Just as much as anybody else
On the face of this Earth
Now I've armed myself with courage
I 'm gonna win this war
Oh yeah, yeah
I won't be mis'd anymore

Have you ever been
Mishandled, or misled
Did you get tangled in their web
Turn away from deceitful people who smile
With a woman's strength not the heart of a child

(chorus)

(bridge)
Accept no limitations
Seek no one's validation
Meet your own expectations
Life should be a celebration

(chorus)
I was in a constant battle
To prove that I was worth
Just as much as anybody else
On the face of this Earth
Now I've armed myself with courage
I 'm gonna win this war
Oh yeah, yeah
I won't be mis'd anymore
Mmm, mmm, no, no no
I won't be mis'd anymore
Mmm, mmm, no, no no

DON'T TURN OFF THE LIGHT

Plays: 7
Backstory
This song came about at a Marc Alan Barnette workshop that was held in Green Bay, WI. I was teamed up with Mike Heath to cowrite a song. Mike had the title, but we couldn't figure out which direction to go with the song. After some time had passed, the storyline came to me. I shared my thoughts with Mike, we made some changes and, well, here it is.
Lyrics
DON’T TURN OFF THE LIGHT
© Lisa Medill/ Mike Heath

Friday night is here again
Same two pillows, same old bed
You're reading Harlequin Romance
I'm watching reruns of Friends
At eleven we'll share a good night kiss
Babe we've gotta do more than this...

(chorus)
Don't turn off the light
I want to look deep in your eyes
And see heaven again
Watch my fingers trace your face
Drink in your beauty and grace
I want to smell the sweet soft scent of your skin
Oooh let's do this right
Don't turn off the light

When daylight finds us wrapped as one
Waking with the rising sun
I’ll turn to you and kiss your lips
'N whisper this is what I've missed
Then I'll kiss you again and smile at you
And see your love come shining through

(chorus)

(instrumental bridge)

(1/2 chorus)
Don't turn off the light
I want to look deep in your eyes
And see heaven again
Oooh let's do this right
Don't turn off the light
Girl let's do this right
Don't turn off the light

When Friday night comes back again
I’ll be holding my best friend...

NEXT TO NOTHING

Plays: 4
Backstory
It's been said that 'life imitates art'. In this case, 'art imitates life'. 'Nuff said.. ;-)

I brought a first draft (that I wrote awhile back) to my pal, Lorna Flowers, and asked her if she would be interested in finishing the song with me. Lorna put her songwriting prowess to work, along with a great melody, and voila!

Tracy Rice, an artist/songwriter from Canada and good friend, sang the demo and gave it the 'attitude' that helps the idea hit home.

Kudos to Lorna and Tracy for helping to create and awesome piece of work!!!
Lyrics
Next To Nothing
© L. Medill/L. Flowers

Emotional suicide
That’s what you committed
Looking back in time
I can’t believe you did it
You wanted someone else
Pushed me away
Now you’re beside yourself
With a plan that ricocheted

(chorus)
You’re next to nothing
Left wanting something
Filled with regrets and empty words
At night in your lonely bed
You’ll be reaching out for me
When you wake up you’ll see
You’re next to nothing

Thoughts of us will resurrect
When you lie awake at night
That’s ‘cause you’ll reflect
At the love you left behind
You’ll turn to your pillow
And find no comfort there
Memories hit blow by blow
Making sure that you’re aware

(chorus)

(bridge)
Love didn’t mean anything to you
But it meant so much to me
Now there’s just an empty setting
Where a diamond used to be

(3rd chorus)
You’re next to nothing
Oh, oh
Filled with regrets and empty words
At night in your lonely bed
You’ll be reaching out for me
When you wake up you’ll see
You’re next to nothing

(tag)
Oh, oh
I know
You’ll be reaching out, oh,
Reaching out for me
But you’re not gonna find me there
No, no

TORNADO ALLIE

Plays: 5
Backstory
A friend of mine used to date a gal named Allie. He referred to her as "tornado Allie" when she got, shall we say, agitated. The first time he made mention of her in this way, I instantly knew it was a really cool hook.
Lyrics
TORNADO ALLIE
(c) Lisa L. Medill/Marc-Alan Barnette

Don't be fooled by the calmness in her eyes
In an instant you'll be spinning from the damage flying by
Ain't nothin' you can do just can't hold it back
She hails from Oklahoma leaves destruction in her wake
There’s a trail of broken-hearted men across six states
No man remains unscathed that stays in her path
Yeah you better run for cover before it's too late
Find yourself some shelter there's a big one taking shape

(chorus)
Tornado Allie
Hell hath no fury like a woman's scorn
Tornado Allie
You'll be better off waiting out this storm
You don't want to see the grand finale
Of tornado Allie

It starts the same way every single time
Such an innocent hello ends up a category five
High winds dark clouds building up to breakneck speed
Yeah I was once a victim of her catastrophic ways
Almost was a goner when her inhibitions caved
Was bashed around by brutal words that she hurled at me
I picked up the pieces with some help from Betty Lou
Her work’s beyond the Red Cross yeah she knew what to do

(chorus)

(bridge)
Stay away from windows, search for safer ground
Women grab your men because she’ll take what’s not held down

(chorus)

IMPULSIVE

Plays: 5
Backstory
The idea came to me while thinking about how mundane day-to-day life can become. Sometimes I think we all would like to just stop the hamster-wheel of life, jump off and do something impulsive. I felt the need to write about it, and so this song came to be.
Lyrics
IMPULSIVE
(c) Lisa L. Medill

Up at six a.m.
Get my coffee fix and then....I leave
For the daily grind
Drive to my nine to five....
Look around
Everybody everywhere seems lost as me
I need to find myself I'm gonna break free and do

(chorus)
Something impulsive
Something crazy, something insane
Buy a ticket to anywhere
Take off like a runaway train
I'll make no reservations
Have no preplanned destinations
Won't worry about what if's
I want to, I gotta do
Something impulsive

Take my Harley bike
Down the interstate or ride...a horse
Bareback on the beach
Swim near the coral reefs
What a sight
Drink pricey champagne underneath the moon
I need to stop and make these visions come true and do

(chorus)
(bridge)
I can't measure my life by the number of breaths I take
Instead I’ll live for moments that will take my breath away ... that's why I gotta do

(chorus)

Something impulsive

LITTLE BIG MAN

Plays: 3
Backstory
I brought this song idea with me when I met with Christine Anderson (author of 'The Songwriters' Blueprint') to do some cowriting. After our first draft, I told her about a new direction that we could take the song. In view of the number of families today where the father is not at home all of the time, many due to being off at war, I thought of how many 'little boys' are acting as 'little big men' of the house while their Daddys are gone. Soon thereafter, "Little Big Man" came to be...
Lyrics
Little Big Man
(c) Lisa L. Medill/Christine Anderson

Billy's Daddy don't live at home anymore
The third battalion called he left for war
Momma has it tough taking care of four kids
But Billy helps her out like his Daddy did
He’s fixed the fence now he's mowing the yard
Momma tells herself he works so hard

(1st chorus)
He must feel like a parent more than a son
Trying to be everything to everyone
He's just a boy
Doing all he can
Wish he could be a little boy
Not a little big man

Momma mails letters to his Daddy each week
She cries when she writes baby’s learning to speak
Tommy's starting school 'n Michael told her last night
He wants the training wheels off his big boy bike
Billy took ‘em off ‘n helped him on the seat
He smiled as Michael rode down the street

(2nd chorus)
He must feel like a parent more than a son
Trying to be everything to everyone
He's just a boy
Doing all he can
Wish he could be a little boy
Not a little big man

(bridge)
One night Billy’s Daddy came back home
And sat beside him on his bed
Billy woke up and held him tight
As his father softly said

(3rd chorus)
You must feel like a parent more than a son
Trying to be everything to everyone
You're just a boy
Doing all you can
Now you can be a little boy
Not a little big man

(tag)
Now you can be a little boy

PLAY ME A SONG (IN THREE QUARTER TIME)

Plays: 4
Backstory
This great song came about when Marghie Evans, Lorna Flowers, and I got together one day in January, 2005. I think this one will be a real crowd pleaser, as it's hard to not to sway back and forth even when simply sitting down!
Lyrics
PLAY ME A SONG IN THREE-QUARTER TIME
© M. Evans/L. Flowers/L. Medill

My buddies and me are the house band
Here in this smoky old bar
We do our best to play the requests
For tips people put in the jar

One night this guy walks up hands me twenty bucks
And says man can you slow things right down

(chorus)
Play me a song in three quarter time
I want to hold her and look in her eyes
So she can see I’m the right guy
Play me a song in three quarter time

He told me his baby was leaving
To take a new job in L.A.
She’s tired of this town there’s nothin’ around
She can’t think of a reason to stay

He said I never told her I loved her
But tonight that’s all gonna change

(chorus)
Play me a song in three quarter time
She needs to know how hard I’m tryin’
I want to show her I’m the right guy
Play me a song in three quarter time

(bridge)
The crowd started getting impatient
He saw his girl on her way out
He turned back to me and said please mister please
You’ve got to count it in now

(chorus)
Play me a song in three quarter time
I just need three minutes to change her mind
Then she’s gonna know I’m the right guy
Play me a song in three quarter time

Play me a song in three quarter time

MOVING VIOLATION

Plays: 2
Backstory
Somewhere I heard the phrase "moving violation" and thought that it would make a really cool song title. In due time, the lyrics came together and …voila!
Lyrics
MOVING VIOLATION
© Lisa L. Medill

I've seen you around before
Wonder if you're spoken for
More than just a pretty face
More than satin, silk, and lace
When you move around the room
I can smell your sweet perfume
Everywhere you cause a scene
Before, after, in between

With your glitz and glamour
I just stare and stammer
When you swerve all those curves
You’re hotter than a Firebird

(chorus)
You're a moving violation
A moving violation
Breaking hearts and regulations
U-turns causing complications
You're a moving violation

Gonna get to know your name
No time for those guessing games
Waiting longer makes it tough
Let me say enough's enough
My heart’s racing in my chest
Doesn’t get a second’s rest
When you flash that sexy grin
You send me in a tailspin

Losing traction, losing time
Don't give me the yield sign
Need you now nothing less
Emergency, I'm in distress

(chorus)
You're a moving violation
A moving violation
Breaking hearts and regulations
U-turns causing complications

(instrumental bridge)

(repeat 2nd pre-chorus and chorus)

(partial chorus)
You're a moving violation
Moving violation
Breaking hearts and regulations
U-turns causing complications
You're a moving violation

HER FAVORITE SONG

Plays: 1
Backstory
One day in November '04, I was staying at my friend, Lorna Flowers', home. Our mutual friend, Marghie Evans, was getting ready to leave after having written with Lorna that morning. I got a song idea from something that Marghie said during our conversation before she left. I told her, "Hey - that could be a fun song! A guy and a gal could be driving along, she hears a song on the radio but doesn't know the words, so she just sings 'ooh, ooh, la, la, la." The three of us went to lunch, came back to Lorna's home, and had a fun time writing this song... I hope you enjoy it! :-)
Lyrics
Her Favorite Song
(c) M. Evans/L. Medill/L. Flowers

(verse)
Driving with my baby chasing the sun
Rag top down tanning on the run
Cut-off t-shirt she's lookin' mighty fine
Pushing buttons on my radio
Trying to find
Her favorite song
But she don't know all the words
So she just goes

(chorus)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
She's no Martina but she sure has fun
Singing along to her favorite song

(verse)
Torchlit tiki bars surf and sand
She wants to dance so she takes my hand
Just like us palm trees are swaying
All of a sudden the band is playing
Her favorite song
But she don't know all the words
So she just goes

(chorus)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
She's no Loretta but she sure has fun
Singing along to her favorite song

(bridge)
Later on when we get home
Grab my guitar and I start to strum
Head on my shoulder she hums along
To her favorite song

(chorus)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
She ain't no Reba but she sure has fun
Singing along to her favorite song

(final chorus)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
Ooh, ooh, ooh, la, la, la
She sings along to her favorite song

WHAT YOU SEE

Plays: 3
Backstory
This title popped into my brain one day and then the ideas just followed.
I wish I had something profound to tell you, but "that's all she wrote"! lol
Lyrics
What You See
(c) Lisa L. Medill

Go ahead you can look
But you can't touch
Yeah I might like you
But now I don't know much ...about you
You waltz into this bar
Smile at me, kiss my hand and think
That like some fairytale
You can whisk me off my feet
And ride off in the sunset
(chorus)
What you see is not what you get
Not yet
First you've gotta show me
Come on boy, yeah, let me see
Prove you're more than just an admirer
Treat me right, set my soul on fire
Until then
What you see is not what you get (what you get, ohh, ohh)

You ask me for a chance
And buy me a beer
Well you might have a shot
But let me make this clear...just go slow
My jaded heart is numb
Wanting life to return
And feel each beat strong and full
So for my own self-defense
That’s why I have to tell you

(chorus)

(bridge)
I'm not sayin' I'm made of glass
'N I'm not here for display
But I want more than a one night stand
And I'm standing by what I say …and I say

(chorus)

(tag)
What you get
Ooh, what you get
What you see is not what you get
Ooh, what you get
Go ahead you can look
But you can’t touch

DON'T QUIT NOW

Plays: 4
Backstory
I was feeling kinda down about songwriting one day when the phrase 'don't quit now' came into my head. I knew that other people feel the same way about life from time to time, but wondered who in particular could I write such a song for. Being that I work for Milwaukee Public Schools, I thought of our students who participate in Special Olympics. Shortly thereafter, I dedicated this song to and and have been in regular communication with the great folks who work at the Wisconsin State Office for Special Olympics. Knowing that this song was going to be destined for greater things than I had initially anticipated, I decided to invest in a full demo. So, I had some of my best musician friends create the beautiful sound that you hear on the song.

I had the privilege of singing my song to over 3,000 Special Olympic athletes, numerous volunteers and law enforcement officers from across Wisconsin at their 20th Anniversary Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run on Thursday, June 8th. It was so heartwarming to see the athletes sitting or standing all across the UW-Stevens Point, WI track, clapping their hands to the song and rocking to the music.

...yeah...THIS is what songwriting is ALL about!
Lyrics
DON'T QUIT NOW (FOR THE ATHLETES WHO PARTAKE IN THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS GAMES)
(c) Lisa L. Medill

Standing at the starting line
Your heart is beating fast
You see whose on your left and right
'N think of milestones you've passed
You've exercised and trained real hard
Your body shows the proof with scars
You must be brave you must be strong
You've waited for this all year long

(chorus)
Don't quit now
Give yourself a chance
Don't quit now
This could be your turn to dance
Take a deep breath, take it steady
You can do it, you are ready
You've made it this far so reach out
Don't quit now

This competition’s much more
Than a trophy or a prize
It's a chance to grow and explore
All the gifts you have inside
If you should stumble and fall down
Get up dust off and face the crowd
The finish line is just ahead
Believe in yourself and these words my friend

(chorus)

(bridge)
All that you can do is do all that you can
The only way you'll fail is if you fail to try again...

(chorus) first for lines instrumental

Take a deep breath, take it steady
You can do it, you are ready
You've made it this far so reach out
You've made it this far so reach out
Don't quit now
Give yourself a chance
Don't quit now
This could be your turn to dance
Don't quit now

Lyrics
THAT AIN'T LOVE
© Lisa L. Medill/KatieBeth/Keith Pulvermacher

How could you hurt me that way
And never breathe a breath of shame
Call me your angel
And rule with a devil’s fist
Pain can’t be erased with your kiss

You carved a place in my soul
Where you would take complete control
Push me then pull me
And yell you better watch your step
I’m through obeying commands

(chorus)
I'm me, not you
I’m not gonna do what you tell me to
It's time I lived life for myself
Sympathy and tenderness
Aren’t shown with golden gloves
Yeah what you think is love
That ain't love

Healing can’t happen too fast
Because the lessons learned won’t last
And I’m not going
On guilt trips that never end
In your land of pretend

(bridge)
Damage is done... I’m not just anyone

MAID IN MEXICO

Plays: 1
Lyrics
MAID IN MEXICO
(c) Lisa Medill/Randy VanVooren

Job's got him moving south of the border
Only ten days to get things in order
And then six months at a Holiday Inn
She's a heaven-sent beauty that turns every head
Makes her living by making beds
But she's got dreams that are bigger than this
Friday night six o’ five
Happy hour, she walks by
Coincidence...no accident
Small talk leads to a little kiss
But who would've thought it’d come to this

(chorus)
Ay, ay, ay, ay, oh,
Here we go
My little maid in Mexico

Six months later it’s time for adios
Hello cozy villa nestled by the coast
But he can’t leave his senorita behind
Those big brown eyes and long black hair
All his life he’s been prepared
But he’s scared to death
For the very first time
Sunday night on one knee
He holds his breath and shows a ring
No second guess, she screams out yes
Tears of joy sealed by a kiss
Who would’ve thought it would come to this

(chorus)

(bridge)
They exchange vows and silver rings
As the Mariachis play horns and strings
Four months later she’s startin’ to show
A little bambino, little bambino…made in Mexico

(chorus)
Ay, ay, ay, ay, oh
Ay, ay, ay, ay, oh
There they go
They had it made in Mexico
Maid in Mexico

They’ll get the package Monday morning
Of all the things I’m giving back
My Blackberry, laptop, and the keys to the company car
Connections to a heart attack
No more ‘round the clock on call
I’m loggin’ off once and for all

(chorus)
And set my soul free
Be who I wanna be
And reconnect with me

Under a tarp in my garage
Is my ticket out of town
I dust her off, tune her up, ‘til she’s runnin’ like new
Hop on my Harley Sturgis-bound
Singing with the Eagles as I ride
Down endless roads and clear blue skies

THE END HAS GOT TO START SOMEWHERE

Plays: 1
Lyrics
TONIGHT I’M GONNA LET MY HEART MAKE UP MY MIND
WE’VE HAD ONE FOOT OUT THE DOOR
GOING NOWHERE FOR SOMETIME
THERE’S NOTHING LEFT BUT LEAVING
THE LAST STEP IS GOODBYE
OUR HEART SAYS TAKE IT, IT HURTS TO SAY IT

(CHORUS)
THE END HAS GOT TO START SOMEWHERE
WE CAN’T BE AFRAID OF BEING SCARED
LIFE’S NOT WAITING FOR US TO STOP WAITING AROUND
WE’VE GOTTA MOVE NOW
CHEATING OUR HEARTS JUST ISN’TFAIR
CLOSING OUR MINDS TO WHAT’S OUT THERE
HOLDING ON TO NOT LETTING GO
GETS US NOWHERE DOWN THE ROAD
THE END HAS GOT TO START SOMEWHERE

SOMEDAY I’LL BET WE’LL LOOK BACK
WONDER WHY WE TOOK SO LONG
TO LET GO OF EACH OTHER
WHEN LOVE WAS ALREADY GONE GONE
THINK OF ALL WE MIGHT BE MISSING
IF WE KEEP HANGING ON WE’LL NEVER KNOW TO LET GO

(CHORUS)

TIME KEEPS TICKING, IT’S TIME FOR QUITTING
WE JUST CAN’T STAND STILL, MOMENTS NEVER WILL
