BEAUTIFUL LIFE

Shreveport on a summer evening
Screen door is barely breathing
Outside the pavement's steaming after a pounding rain
She's in a rush getting supper ready
Second try at his mom's spaghetti
First time was a bust but he said he loved it anyway
He honks his horn as he's pulling into the drive
She's on that porch waiting with a big old smile

And they're so young, barely starting out
Learning what life's about
Writing their story one page at a time
So in love and so amazed
At the beautiful life they've made

They can't quit talking all through supper
Catching up with one another
A gentle kiss shows he loves her more than words can say
Later on in their tiny kitchen
They're cutting up and washing dishes
When she feels the baby kickin' it takes her breath away
She grabs his hand, places it on her side
Then she laughs out loud, watching his eyes get wide
