(v1)
On Saturday, dad gave me his toolbox
It’s gotten hard for him to even get the latch unlocked
Every now and then he forgets where he’s kept it for years
It was bittersweet for us and a world of tough
Down there in his workshop as I opened up
That dented ‘n dinged, Craftsman, green, keeper of memories
(Chorus)
It smelled like years of sawdust, three in one, and Marlboro Reds
Had the hammer that I’d hold for him every chance I’d get
Drill bits I surprised him with one year for Fathers Day
The soldering gun he taught me to use on my 5th Grade Milky Way
It held a lot, My father’s toolbox
(2)
He got it as a graduation gift
Still had the Cubs sticker stuck on it
From that double header at Wrigley that He took me to when I was eight
Mom loved the sewing bench he made for her
But hated the sailor words that I’d learn
When he’d hit his thumb or only measure once then made a big mistake
(Chorus)
It smelled like years of sawdust, three in one, and Marlboro Reds
Had the hammer that I’d hold for him every chance I’d get
A combination wrench from the 5 piece set I bought him for Father’s Day
The soldering gun he taught me to use on my 4th Grade Milky Way
It held a lot, A lot….
(final chorus)
Smelled like years of sawdust ,three in one , and Marlboro Reds
Had the hammer that I’d hold for him, that rusty steel treasure chest
He told me to take care if it then said what’s done is done
I thanked him for all of it but that didn’t feel like enough….
Last Night Dad gave me his toolbox,
it held a lot
