Daughter and Drifter © Easterling/Townley (V1) The sherriff’s only daughter had some wild child in her eyes Everyone had plans for her to marry well The drifter was a tumbleweed full of stories from the road Which ones were true was hard to tell Opposite sides of the track but love don’t care about that.. (Chorus) Can’t put the smoke back in the stack, steal the wheels off the train Keep the engine in the station after the coal has felt the flame You can’t keep two hearts apart once that whistle plays It’s a runaway express when love calls your name (v2) She left supper on the stove and the whole town in the dark Hitched a ride on the drifters every word He laid his cards on the table when she called his bluff And rolled the dice on those golden eyes of hers Opposite sides of the track But love don’t care about that.. (Chorus) (v3) A few months later she mailed a letter to tell her daddy she was fine And saw a poster of the drifter on the wall Was wanted for kidnapping her and when she ran to warn him Found him shot down by the long arm of the law Odds were against it ending well But it’s the story grandma lived and loved to tell (Chorus)
