VERSE 1 (IN D) D / G D G D A7 / D / G D G A7 D /

A.P. Carter lived in a valley poor,
Poor Valley really was its name.
Pocket full of dust, songs filled up his soul,
Singing with fam'ly was his game.
STRUM!! Drove across the hills, finding mountain tunes,
Down old roads that went on oh so long.
Left his wife alone, chasing his big dream,
Hoping that one day he'd SING the first country heartbreak song.

VERSE 2 (IN D) D / G D G D A7 / D / G D G A7 D /

His wife Sara sang with a voice so pure,
But he was off from town to town.
Sara gripped his sleeve, eyes begged him to stay,
Sad nights that brought her poor heart down.
HARD! Just like a love song, came a kind young man,
Couldn't pick guitar but love beat strong.
His name was Coy Bays, wouldn't leave her side—
'Twas the start of what would be the first country heartbreak song.

DEEP! Their kin shouted out, "Marriage is for life!"
Harmony so cold from every mouth.
Thumped Bibles like drums; handed judgment down,
Took Coy out west, left her down south.
LOUD! Coys mom stole her words, rewrote their love tale,
Hid all of the mail, said it was wrong.
Told these broken hearts their souls had moved on,
Made them think their love was now the first country heartbreak song.

VERSE 4 (IN D) D / G D G D A7 / D / G D G A7 D /

LIGHT! Coy spent many years in a mountain fog,
Till Sara's voice lit up his skies.
Radio played him a Carter Family tune,
She dedicated to her Coy's blue eyes.
LOUD! Fire ran down his spine, "Mother, why'd you lie?"
"I'm gonna go back to where I belong."
Sara in his arms, never left his side—
'Twasn't their love that would be the first country heartbreak song.

VERSE 5 (IN C) AP C / F C F C G7 / C / F C F G7 C /
F C F C F C G7 / C / F C F C G7 F C

HOLD! When you sing a tune, you stand on what they built,
So sing a verse for heartbroken A.P.
BROUGHT us all the songs, so every voice can join
Harmony that flows through you and me.
STRUM! But his lonesome call still haunts every note,
He lost his wife as millions sang along.
Did he think each night of her blue eyes?
How could he know his love would be the first country heartbreak song?

OUTRO: F C G7 F C
HOLD! How could he know his love would be the first country heartbreak song?
