The Oak Upon the Hill

Grandpa fell in battle somewhere over there.
Grandma had him laid to rest up there on the hill.
When her time came she was placed beside him in that yellow clay.
An acorn grew up between them up there on that glade.
Chorus: From (that) (a) tiny acorn a mighty oak did grow
Nourished in the soil by spring rains and winter snow.
The roots entwine their bodies as they rest in the deep
And, when’er the winds do blow, gently rock them in their sleep.
Daddy couldn’t bring himself to cut that sapling down.
There, between his pa and ma, it seemed ‘twas sacred ground.
I grew up seeing that lone oak upon that hill
And that’s where I placed him. His last wish I did fulfill. (chorus)
And as I dropped that hand of dirt when we placed mama in her tomb,
I felt a bit of comfort amidst the sorrow and the gloom.
I have no fear of that ground when I’m placed amongst them there;
I’ll be home with my family again ‘neath that oak upon the hill.
(Final chorus): From a tiny acorn a mighty oak did grow,
Nourished in the soil by spring rains and winter snow.
The roots will entwine us as we rest in the deep,
And when’er the winds do blow, gently rock us in our sleep.
