Backstory:
We were talking about my father who had recently passed, and I smiled and said he was the most stubborn man I'd ever met, talked about how he wore himself out going to see my mother at her nursing home every day, etc., and...that's how the song started.
Lyrics:
HERE LIES A STUBBORN MAN
V1
Every morning my granddaddy drove his old Ford into town
To see my grandma at the home, he never let her down
All us kids said grandpa your heart can’t take the strain
But he paid no mind and at 9 o’clock he’d be there again
True and loyal to a fault, he held that woman’s hand
He always joked that on his stone they’d write
Here lies a stubborn man
V2
Said when he was a young man he never lost a fight
Made no matter if he was wrong ‘cause he was always right
He was a man of strong opinions, a staunch Southern Democrat
In a barroom or a fox hole you knew he had your back
Folks said he was mule headed but he didn’t give a damn
We always joked that on his stone they’d write
Here lies a stubborn man
Bridge
Tough skinned soft hearted hard line old school
Not a big fan of change
But bad or good
We always knew where grandpa stood
V3
If he was here you know he’d say his casket cost too much
And why were we all wasting time shedding tears and such
I bet he’s up in heaven having one last laugh
‘Cause he paid that gravestone cutter in advance
To write here lies a stubborn man
Yeah he’s drinking up in heaven having one last laugh
‘Cause he paid that gravestone cutter in advance
To write here lies a stubborn man
Here lies a stubborn man
I love you, grandpa
