Backstory:
This song was inspired by a phone conversation with Katy Daley, a country music DJ for WMZQ-FM at the time. She'd been talking about her son, that when she lavished him with kisses, he'd wipe them away. She said she thought there was something wrong about that and someone ought to write a song about it and call it, "Don't Wipe Away Mama's Kisses." I thought that was a great title and wrote it down, then forgot about it. I woke up in the middle of that same night with the first and third verses in my mind, as well as the chorus. I wrote it all down, then went back to sleep. I added a second verse the next morning. Soon after, I demoed the song and played it for Katy. She loved it, and I promised her I'd donate 10% of anything I got for the song to her favorite charity which is the Diabetes Foundation (her son has diabetes if I remember correctly). My mother loved the song, too.
Lyrics:
DON'T WIPE AWAY MAMA’S KISSES
(Writer: Pete Papageorge)
V1:
I remember when I was a little boy
And after the weather turned cool
How mama helped dress us, then made us breakfast
Kissed us and sent us to school
One day I reached with my mittens
To wipe all her kisses away
She happened to notice, then gently told us
Something I remembered today, she said
CH:
Don’t wipe away mama’s kisses
Just let them stay on your face
Cause there's so much love in mama's kisses
Not even time can erase
V2:
She told us a mother's love is special
And nothing could ever make that change
Though we might neglect her and even reject her
Her love would still be the same
And someday when we got older
Then we'd be able to see
For when we were grown and had kids of our own
We'd know the reason she said to me
CH:
Don’t wipe away mama’s kisses
Just let them stay on your face
Cause there's so much love in mama's kisses
Not even time can erase
V3:
Well, now the chapel is quiet
The rest of the family's gone home
I thought I would stay here and find a way here
To gather my thoughts all alone
I wish I'd told her I loved her
A million more times than I did
But I'll always remember that her love was tender
And what she told me when I was a kid
CH:
Don’t wipe away mama’s kisses
Just let them stay on your face
Cause there's so much love in mama's kisses
Not even time can erase
Cause there's so much love in mama's kisses
Not even time can erase
Not even time can erase
