Backstory:
I wrote this song for our neighbor, Mr. Rubin Odom. He lost his wife Vonnie to alzheimers not long after we moved here. He is part of the greatest generation and their love story was timeless.
Lyrics:
A LONG GOODBYE
(Mac Millen)
V1
They were married in the springtime
In their home town in '39
They settled on his family's farm they hoped to own
The war came like a dark cloud
One last kiss before his train pulled out
He wiped her tears and promised he'd come back home
Ch
When life brings us a long goodbye
A love that's true will hold the line
Of all the lessons I have learned
There's one I can't deny
Love is stronger than a long goodbye
V2
He survived the war, they built a life
She loved being a farmer's wife
But their farming dream died on a courthouse floor
Next twenty years he worked the road
Drivin' long haul trucks kept him gone
With a kiss, she'd be waiting at their door
Ch
Br
He knew he was a lucky man
'Cause she helped him understand
God gave them this love for all time
V3
Now he goes to the nursing home
So she won't be there all alone
Even though she doesn't know him anymore
He tells her 'bout the life they had
If she smiles he doesn't feel so sad
He can see she's walking towards Heaven's door
