Backstory:
In part, this song is a reflection of the work I do and is a culmination of life stories I have heard from clients over the years. It is also something I have personally experienced, in the past. People will often say they feel, "Empy," when they are hurting. I was trying to express what that means, so I played around with the word, empty and how we use it metaphorically (empty promises, empty streets, empty words, and things that can be left empty). In our disposable society, when something is empty we throw it away, it should be different with people, but that isn't always the case. Sometimes people stay in relationships too long and repeat patterns and end up in the same place, feeling empty. They fear change and so they stay in empty relationships, waiting for something to change, when perhaps it is already over. Empty is a word to describe objects but it is also a strong emotional word. When people feel empty they will talk about feeling like they have nothing left to give, and they become reflective, which is probably the point of this song. I have experienced this feeling in life, but probably more importantly, I have spent a lot of time talking with people who can relate to this on an emotional level. Although it is not a preferred human emotion, it can be universally experienced. Unfortunately, when people get to this point, they sometimes start to say hurtful things they cannot take back, which leads to feeling increased emptiness. It is a dilemma, this song doesn't offer the solution, it is reflective, and perhaps planting a seed for change. The song isn't telling the listener to change it is simply saying, "This is what it is," and this is what you know and you can keep with what you know and remain feeling empty, or.... I imagine if this were in a scene the character would be coming to this realization as she/he was gearing up to leave and pursue a healthier choice.
Lyrics:
V1
I've lived with empty promises
And I've walked down empty streets
Had too many loveless kisses
Where my heart didn't skip a beat
V2
Several times I said no
Before I finally shut the door
Let's not have an all-time-low
We've been down that road before
Bridge
A heart without love is empty
Chorus
An empty bed is so cold
Without love to keep you warm
Putting your life on hold
Waiting out the storm
Empty words once they are spoken
Cannot be taken back
Empty promises leave a heart broken
Crying for the love we lack
Bridge
A heart without love is empty
V3
Lots of things can be left empty
And not suffer quite as much
As a love that could never be
And a heart that hasn't been touched
Chorus
An empty bed is so cold
Without love to keep you warm
Putting your life on hold
Waiting out the storm
Empty words once they are spoken
Cannot be taken back
Empty promises leave a heart broken
Crying for the love we lack
Outro
A heart without love is empty
Empty, empty
