Backstory:
"This Is Not A Love Song" has a driving, pulsating rhythm that carries the narrative of lost love to harmonic heights. The lyrics are downhearted but, at the same time, soaring. The confessions and expressions of affection expose true feelings that are countered by the contradictory hook, “This is not a love song”. (Lyrics by Gerald LeNoir, music by Charles Burnham, vocals by MonLee Mane)
The song was inspired by a Smokey Robinson song with a similar theme and similar device of meaning the opposite of what the lyrics say.
Lyrics:
V1
Like a thief, you stole my heart
You told me that we’d never part
But you lied, led me astray
But I still want you to stay
CH
Twenty-four hours don’t make a day
There are no stars in the Milky Way
There is no right; there is no wrong
And this is not a love song
V2
You make me weak, I must confess
You’re the key to my happiness
But you belong to someone else
So I must keep my love to myself
CH
Seven days don’t make a week
And Aristotle, he wasn’t Greek
Adios don’t mean so long
And this is not a love song
BRIDGE
Babies don’t cry
Flowers don’t die
Robins can’t fly
And I can’t lie
This is not a love song
This is not a love song
This is not a love song
This is not a love song
V3
You thrill me, girl. You light my fire
You fill me up with a strong desire
But you and I can never be
And this is why, I’m sure you’ll agree
CH
Red apples don’t grow on trees
Golden honey’s not made by bees
Samson and Hercules weren’t strong
And this is not a love song
V4
You’re a treasure, one of a kind
You give me pleasure, blow my mind
But you just leave me hanging on
And I know soon you’ll be gone
CH
Twenty-four hours don’t make a day
There are no stars in the Milky Way
There’s no right; there’s no wrong
And this is not a love song
This is not a love song
This is not a love song
This is not a love song
