Backstory:
I'm a combat vet and years ago I read a poem entitled the Thousand Yard Stare. I was very familiar with the concept as I saw it all over Vietnam. I decided to write a song about it.
Lyrics:
THE THOUSAND YARD STARE
Battle hardened soldiers
Humping in Vietnam
Through the rice paddies
Heavily armed
You can tell how they walk
That there's been hell to pay
One look in their eyes
It's a dead giveaway
They all have an empty look about them
Like they've lost their hearts and souls
They all know it's a cross they bear
Cuz in their lives it's just one more deep hole
It's the vacant look of death
The thousand yard stare
They don't hope for a future
All their innocense is gone
They're only biding their time
Until they go home
They'll take out anything
That gets in their way
Don't try and stop them
They'll have the final say
CHORUS
It's the vacant look of death
The thousand yard stare
