Backstory:
I bounced the title "too much country" off my larger-than-life family man, cowboy, and songwriting friend Jim, and a few days later he and I sat down at Rudy's BBQ, where he told me all the details of his daily life on a farm and ranch, and the hard work of it that starts at dawn and goes to dusk. I went home and created this song to encapsulate the love and pride and sweat and joy of living and working the land. We had a bit of fun spicing up the bridge in this recording - Jim himself is hollering "wee doggies", and the splash sound is of my daughter doing a cannon ball at my neighborhood pool. It was a hoot and a lot of fun writing this!
Note: Glad to provide a demo that contains the alternate lyric line in the bridge!
Lyrics:
TOO MUCH COUNTRY
Jim Garrett/Terri Fann
Verse 1: Down by the river the cows are mooin'
Ducks are quackin', doves are cooin'
The coffee's brewin', the biscuits bakin'
And the sun is barely up
Verse 2: Out in the barn, they're squawkin' for breakfast
Hogs are gruntin', chickens gettin' restless
My pants'll get torn, pitchin' hay, spreadin' corn
But getting' up and goin' first thing in the mornin', that's what I call fun
Chorus: When it's too much country for anybody else
It's just right for me
Wanna-be cowpokes, pretty boys, and city folks
Just don't see what I see
When I look out on the land, I realize how lucky I am
'Cause too much country
Is just right for me
Verse 3: Movin' those cattle through cactus and cowpies
Tractor runnin' through hayfields waist-high
Fillin' up feed troughs, shooing them flies off
Proud to be a working man, loving every minute that, I'm where I belong
Repeat Chorus
Bridge: And just when I need a slow down
My baby comes around
Says meet me at the pond downstream
For fishin', kissin', and skinny dippin' (wee doggies! splash!)
[Alternate/family-friendly line - replace the above with:
For some catfishin' and some rope swinging (wee doggies! splash!)]
Repeat Chorus 2X
