Backstory:
I wrote this song about my dad. Every word is 100% true. I gave this to him as a gift for Christmas 2023. I wrote the lyrics and the melody was work for hire.
Lyrics:
GRIT
VERSE ONE
He taught me how to drive a post
How to stretch a fence
Showed me how to clean a fish
Pitch a Coleman tent
Used his knife not a needle
To get my splinters out
I'd hold real still, try not to cry
Just to make him proud
CHORUS
Yeah I’m a daddy’s girl,
But not in the usual way
Wasn't pampered, or polished,
Worked more than I played
A diamond’s the hardest rock in the world
But my dad knew, it takes grit to make a pearl
VERSE TWO
Yeah no one has a dad like mine
God only made the one
And yeah I am his daughter
But he raised me like a son
Looking back it’s plain to see
Didn’t know how much I had
God’s greatest gift to me
Was to give me my dad
CHORUS
BRIDGE
He’s 86, it’s half past six, he’s just in from the fields
Tomorrow comes, he’ll be up with the sun.
Takes one to make one.
GRIT
CHORUS
