Backstory:
My grandfather was a horseman and left Ireland in the late 1800s and made his way to Chicago (Chi-Town), where he met my grandmother who had also come from Ireland. They helped many families come over and settle in Chicago. When he was homesick and needed to set his mind free, he'd remember his faithful companion, and the places they would travel. Lyrics were written by Clare Steffen, and music & music production by William Sherry.
Lyrics:
V1
When I was a farm hand
My horse and I would ride
All across the land
Like magic he'd glide
No longer a wee lad
I crossed the sea to work the mills
My horse became a nomad
Set free to roam the hills
Pre-Chorus
As I sail across the whitecaps
I can feel my resistance
My mind has drawn a map
It leads me through the distance
Chorus
When I need to be free
And life starts to unravel
My spirit returns, across the sea
Where my horse and I would travel
--Instrumental break--
V2
I learned to settle down
And work hard in the new country
I helped others get to Chi town
Who'd come from the Old Country
My horse sense knows
My home is always with me
For the land where I did grow
In my heart, it holds the key
Chorus
When I need to be free
And life starts to unravel
My spirit returns, across the sea
Where my horse and I would travel
Post-Chorus (Spoken)
Wherever I shall roam
If I feel like I'm not winning
My mind returns back home
To the place of my beginning
--Instrumental break---
Fade Out
The hills of Ireland
Are life's roadmap
Forever I can see
They set my spirit free
Home free, home free
