Show your appreciation of nature by writing a song that mentions a place in nature, such as oceans, mountains, deserts, forests, etc. What to Submit: You can write a tribute to nature like Louis Armstrong's classic "What a Wonderful World" (B. Thiele/G. Weiss), or you can be inspired by the many great songs that point out people's lack of concern about nature, from Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" to will.i.am, "S.O.S. (Mother Nature)." SPECIAL EVENT! Staff Writer For a Day with Young Music City! This is an exclusive opportunity to be selected by Emily Dryburgh, Co-Founder of Young Music City and RNBW Collective, for a chance to find out what it's like to be a professional staff songwriter for a day. This includes a meeting with Emily and a CO-WRITING SESSION with singer-songwriter Chad Michael Jervis of the band King Calaway, which is currently touring with Zac Brown Band. About our guests. Please read the complete listing before submitting. Here's how it works:
HOW IT WORKS: Emily will listen to ALL the songs submitted. She will narrow the field down to her top "contenders" (Rising Star Winners). Emily will select ONE writer from this field to win "Staff Writer for the Day!" Bonus: She will also be listening for additional songs to pitch and may express interest in pitching songs from the Contenders list.
WHAT TO SUBMIT: Emily is open and able to hear great songs in most popular styles for consideration. More specifically, she says if you are pitching a Country song, she'll be looking for a song that are just great songs that feel competitive. Open to different tempos and genres and unique styles as the trends are always expanding. Lyrically, submit songs with great flow, clever, catchy, and descriptive. Also listen to King Calaway songs for a sense of what may interest Chad Michael Jervis. For Pop songs or other genres it's a bit more wide open. Again, looking for great songs with strong melodies, hooks, and lyrics that feel competitive. There is no limit to the number of songs you may submit.
QUALITY OF DEMOS: Do not need to submit a full master-sounding demo. Worktapes that are clean (e.g., no background noise or distractions) are fine. Simple guitar or piano/vocal demos and full professional-sounding demos will all be accepted. For this special event pitch, lyrics-only are also permitted.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: First, make sure to place your special event song (MP3 and typed lyrics) in your Song Locker. Note: DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME on the lyric sheet for this event. The pitch should be anonymous.
In the "Note for Pitch Guest" area, please let our guest know the following information: either a) I wrote this song music/lyric alone; b) I co-wrote this song providing mostly the lyric; c) I co-wrote this song providing mostly the music; d) My collaborator and I both contributed equally to the lyric and music of this song.
In Pitching area submit your special event song(s) from your Song Locker drop down menu to ther pitch opportunity using SongU credits.
How will you know if you are a contender? Make sure your emails from SongU.com are not being sent to your junk/spam folder. You will receive an email from SongU.com when Emily has listened, letting you know if she has passed on your song or if you are in the field of contenders (Note -- if you receive your email notices in quick succession, it is because she is listening in batches before deciding. Then she marks her choices.) Emily may also express interest in pitching some of the contenders' songs.
Winner Selection: There will be a "BIG REVEAL" session in the SongU e-classroom scheduled after the final submission deadline, in which Emily will discuss her listening process, why certain songs caught her attention, answer questions, and finally reveal who she has selected as the Staff Writer for a Day! Date TBA for SPEC-460 The Big Reveal! This session will be recorded, and a transcript will be available on SongU.com.
Follow-up for Winner: The date and time of your Staff Writer for a Day 3-hour Co-Write session will be scheduled between you and Young Music City. This is your opportunity to walk through the industry doors and get noticed. If you cannot travel to meet the guest for the session within a year selection date, you also have the option of a 3-hour Online session instead.

Songwriters, important: Songs have to be cleared for Sync Licensing as per the following guidelines (no exceptions):
- You must own both your master (recordings) and 100% of your synchronization (publishing). If you do not...
- Then, all master owners, co-writer(s) or co-publisher(s), must sign our licensing agreement as well.
- Songs must be Cleared: meaning if you have paid musicians and/or singers including background vocalists, you must have a signed 'work for hire' or release form for each person involved in making your recording so that they have no further claim to the song. Please note, the producer who produced your recording should be able to help you acquire a work for hire agreement or release, however in many cases there may be a fee involved particularly if the recording was purchased as a demo. No writers signed with major publishing companies with major administration deals.
- Submissions must be Master/Broadcast quality recordings. If we express interest, you will need to supply us with a mastered copy of both the song and an instrumental track.
Pitch Follow Up: If this guest expresses interest in your song you will be asked to sign an agreement for this project only (non-exclusive); with a 50%/50% split for both the master/sync licenses. Will not take publishing of the song so the publisher/writers will get all the performance income. If there is no upfront licensing fee, the 'guest' will take 50% of the publishing income for this placement only. The 'guest' will not take ownership of the copyright.

Updated 10/6/2023: Music Publisher who will be acting in the capacity of publishing administrator only. Seeking Broadcast Quality original songs and tracks:
a) Clean, positive, happy, fun, lighthearted, uplifting family-oriented songs (nothing sad or too slow) of any genre including instrumentals to be played on "overhead radio" in malls, stores, airports, convention centers and restaurants.
b) Also, songs with genres and styles typically played in bars, nightclubs, lounges, casinos, cruise ships etc. Nothing too loud too fast or too rock, lyrics must be clean, no swearing or foul language, vocals must be English language.
Please read TERMS before submitting: "If I express interest in your song, I would be administering the publishing only. If your song is co-written all writers must agree to these terms: You will keep your publishing and your master rights. Your songs will not be distributed for sync opportunities or distributed for any internet royalties, compilation CD's, Spotify etc. These opportunities are non-exclusive DIRECT LICENSING which means royalties will be paid directly to my account in a folder in your name and you will receive 50% of the direct licensing royalties. There are NO performance royalties involved with this type of licensing (to clarify: P.R.O's do not monitor "overhead radio" and it does not generate performance income). Note however, that because I personally co-publish with this direct licensing company, if your song is accepted the title will automatically be listed in my P.R.O. but it will be RE-TITLED for this specific license. The re-title will also appear in your P.R.O., as a listing of the company I co-pub with. It will NOT interfere with your ORIGINAL copyright/title, publishing and mastering. I can delete the song from this platform at your request at any time. But the re-title will continue to be listed as a formality.
