DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO
Is there anyone listnin’ who hadn't thought about quittin’
And runnin’ away
Is there anyone here who hadn’t feared
What’s comin’ next day
Is there anyone who hadn’t felt like a fool
And asked yourself what am I gonna do
You gotta reach way down
Ride those feelin’s out
For your family, faith and freedom
You work hard to hold onto
Do what you gotta do
A single mom in the city or a farm in Mississippi
Some roads run uphill
You make your own breaks and your own mistakes
Doin’ what you feel
After more than a few walls ran into
You tell yourself to hell with the rules
You gotta reach way down
Ride those feelin’s out
For your family, faith and freedom
You work hard to hold onto
Do what you gotta do
Dead tired you wanna stop, don’t wanna go another round
But without a second thought, you drop that plow back in the ground
You gotta reach way down
Ride those feelin’s out
For your family, faith and freedom
You work hard to hold onto
For your family, faith and freedom
Make no excuse
Do what you gotta do
Do what you gotta do

KINDNESS AND RESPECT
I called him Lieutenant Dan
Purple Heart from Vietnam
Agent orange took his left arm
Always first on his feet
Singin’ “O say can you see”
His right hand pressed to his heart
And he’d say - Life is learned with blood and sweat
Kindness is earned just like respect
Grandpa’s quartet was blood, sweat kindness and respect
Loved to sing Amazin’ Grace
Ev’ry mornin’ at daybreak
From his church, his tractor seat
Nine o’clock was his bedtime
He’d tell grandma we’re all fine
Right before he’d fall asleep
Life is learned with blood and sweat
Kindness is earned just like respect
Grandpa’s quartet was blood, sweat kindness and respect
I won’t forget all he taught me
But laugh how he sang so off key
Life is learned with blood and sweat
Kindness is earned just like respect
Grandpa’s quartet he sang till the Lord said rest
With blood, sweat, kindness and respect
Blood, sweat, kindness and respect

MY BEST IS YET TO BE
Wakin’ up to the loud sound of breathin’
In a shelter full of strangers sleepin’
Twisted up with her mama and sister
Wonderin’ if anybody would miss her
Too young to understand just what they’re doin’ here
She covers up her head to make it disappear
Some days you gotta scream
I can’t take this anymore
Some days you gotta reach
Deeper than you have before
Don’t hold back, don’t concede, when the Devil laughs say I believe
My best is yet to be
Flag wavin’ in a Kansas sky breezy
Can make freedom look pretty damn easy
Somewhere soldiers ‘round a mess hall table
Are toastin' friends now flyin' with angels
Too young to understand just what they’re doin’ here
They raise another glass to make it disappear
Some days you gotta scream
I can’t take this anymore
Some days you gotta reach
Deeper than you have before
Don’t hold back, don’t concede, when the Devil laughs say I believe
My best is yet to be
Instrument Break
Some days you gotta scream
I can’t take this anymore
Some days you gotta reach
Deeper than you have before
Don’t hold back, don’t concede, when the Devil laughs say I believe
My best is yet to be
My best is yet to be
My best is yet to be

WORTH WATCHING
It was evenin’ front porch listnin’
To my elders in my youth
And the sound of rain drops drippin’
Off a rusty old tin roof
It was the first wish on the first star
As the summer sun was droppin’
Little pieces of a life worth watchin’
It was the minute that it hit me
That your grandma was the one
Just to say the rest was his’try
Don’t near cover all we done
It was the arguments and make ups
All our wins and all our losses
Little pieces of a life worth watchin’
It was a gravel road to a fishin’ hole
With kids loaded in the back
It was the way I sweat praying she’d say yes
It don’t get no better than that
I pray when I reach those gates
The Lord sees what I do often
Little pieces of a life worth watchin'
That was the last time I was with him
We spent hours on that porch
It was a special summer evenin'
I’m forever thankful for
I made a wish upon the first star
As the summer sun was droppin’
Little pieces of a life worth watchin’
It was a gravel road to a fishin’ hole
With kids loaded in the back
It was the way I sweat praying she’d say yes
It don’t get no better than that
I pray when I reach those gates
The Lord sees what I do often
Little pieces of a life worth watchin'
I pray when I reach those gates
The Lord sees what I do often
Little pieces of a life worth watchin'

CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR
Hands at two and ten I tightly grip the steering wheel
Holdin' an old friend and still remembrin' how it feels
Freedom of the road, sixteen years old
Just like that, I go back
Cause it’s a part of me, it’s the heart of me
Shadows in my rear view
Mem’ries in the mirror are closer than they appear
Every time I swear I hear that old George Strait tune
I’m back in her arms singing along with Baby Blue
Learnin’ by mistakes, backroads, driveways
Just like that, I go back
Cause it’s a part of me, it’s the heart of me
Shadows in my rear view
Mem’ries in the mirror are closer than they appear
First kiss - fresh starts - lost friends - broke hearts
It’s a part of me, it’s the heart of me
Shadows in my rear view
Mem’ries in the mirror are closer - so much closer - than they appear

THROUGH THE NOISE
Jesus I’m a newbie
I don’t know how to pray
Like that Jimmy Stewart movie
I need an angel sent my way
You make it pretty clear
You’ve got ten firm rules
Don’t matter if my rear
Sits on a pew or bar stool
Your door was standing open
So I just walked on in
Hit my knees beside your pulpit
Started spilling out some sins
Sometimes I feel like giving up
I’m hoping you can hear my voice
Even though I know I make it tough
For you to hear me through the noise
My mom would be encouraged
That I’m finally talking to you
Cause You know how much she worries
I guess the truth is I do too
Your door was standing open
So I just walked on in
Hit my knees beside your pulpit
Started spilling out some sins
Sometimes I feel like giving up
I’m hoping you can hear my voice
Even though I know I make it tough
For you to hear me through the noise
Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok my head’s a blur
In a world that never disconnects the only thing that did was her
Your door was standing open
So I just walked on in
Hit my knees beside your pulpit
Started spilling out some sins
Sometimes I feel like giving up
I’m hoping you can hear my voice
Even though I know I make it tough
For you to hear me through the noise --- END ---

ROLL ME OUT THE BACK DOOR MAMA
ROLL ME OUT THE BACK DOOR MAMA
® 2024 Marvin Adcock
Born in Louisiana in the heart of New Orleans.
Raised up on the river by a dark eyed cajun queen.
I never used to have no fun, never used to get turned on.
Till I felt that rock and roll those southern boys put in my soul
I'd wait until the sun goes down.
Grab my boots and hit the town, and get blown away.
Roll me out the backdoor mama.
Don't put salt on my tail.
Roll me out the back door mama.
Don't put salt on my tail.
Life is made to scream and holler.
Tonight your son's gonna wail.
Quit my job and sold my home, and left for Nashville all alone.
Stuffed my cloths inside a pack, and all I owned was on my back.
Met a man down on his luck, bought his run down pick up truck.
Wrote this song along the way, and dreamed about that Opry stage.
Roll me out the backdoor mama.
Don't put salt on my tail.
Roll me out the back door mama.
Don't put salt on my tail.
Life is made to scream and holler.
Tonight your son's gonna wail. --- END ---

THE PRAYER
A lovin’ kiss in the mornin’
Like a thousand times before
With big blue eyes she’d stand there lookin’
Up at me
I love you she’d whisper
As I was walkin’ out the door
And Lord she’d really mean it
I could see
Sometimes I’d call her
Knowin’ she’d be busy
She’d just say I miss you
When you comin’ home.
And after years of tryin’
She came runnin’ into me.
Said we’re gonna have a baby
Of our own.
She was in her second month
When the doctor found the cancer
Said we caught it soon enough
But we’re gonna need an answer
Cause the treatment it will take
Could kill the embryo
She didn’t even hesitate
She just said no
That baby girl became your mama
A story grandpa told me
At least a dozen times
When I’d sit with him
Oh Lord since we’re talkin’
My grandma’s still doin’ fine
So I wanna thank you for that blessin’
Amen --- END ---
